It is April

now that the wild winds and dust storms are over...........
I open the doors and windows to let in the fresh spring air, and along with it come the melodic sounds of the wild song birds.......all drifting delightfully through the house.
(yellow headed blackbird)
The feel of the coolness and the sounds of the birds, make me want to go out and either take a long walk amongst it all  with Sophie or to get my garden tools and to find a spot of earth to create a lovely haven..........somewhere.
Taboo has even been enticed from his perfect napping spot by the lure of the birds chatter and the smell of fresh earth and grass.  He looks out and chatters back to the birds.

No matter how dry and crackled everything has been through this particularly harsh winter,  there is nothing better than the outside awakening to life after a spring rain.
The wild flowers are starting to cover the grounds
and the antelope are lingering in grassy places among the fields to graze.  They are amazing graceful animals.  I see this group almost each time as I head to the post office.
I have named this fellow Pharaoh.
He stands proud and majestic with his flock of females as I stop to take a photo.
This pretty weather also makes me want to work on garden spaces in the dry gardens.  I am all excited about the process at this time of year..........then as the cool weather turns to heat and dry ground........I am less energetic to proceed.  So I get busy and hope to get finished before that time gets here.
I picked a perfect hot day last week and worked with my cement ideas.  I have previously made cement planting bowls to make the gardens of cactus more welcoming.
I have been wanting to make spheres for these garden spaces. I am thrilled at how these turned out.
I used cement dye for the colorful ones.
Now I am trying to figure out the perfect spot for each one.

I am not sure as to what I want to plant along the grounds and flower beds of the house.........the ground squirrels, also being awakened,  have made their presence known.  They are a challenge to me and eagerly rid my gardens of any thing I am successful at getting to sprout.  They have ruined each pumpkin patch I have tried to get going for the past 3 years.  However, I am not giving up.............. I am working with containers this year.....hoping to be able to grow things and to keep them growing this way without pests bothering them.
For this time, I am simply enjoying nature and freshness of the new earth pushing up the colorful wildflowers.
I hope this finds the spring rains and fresh air have awakened you to days filled with the beauty of nature and the energy to get out amongst it all for a walk to just linger and enjoy!

You sound happy, with spring air, cement bowls and spheres, and that beautiful cactus leaf behind the garden. Enjoy every day, as I hope Zack continues to recover and be well.

I love seeing all your creative endeavors! You truly make a wilderness to bloom. Really like your concrete creations. Mr. Muddling says he's going to try some of that.

You write the most beautiful posts and I do believe this one is my favorite. I've never seen a yellow headed blackbird before. They are so pretty and unusual looking. And, Sophie is simply beautiful. I love your gardens with the cactus, the bowls and clay balls, or spheres. I need to read about spheres. Oh, and the antelope! Enjoyed all if it.

I like the concrete bowls and spheres you made. The antelopes are so graceful. We were able to see them in the wild when we travelled through the US with our RV in past days.
Here we seem to have gone from winter weather directly to summer which is strange. Who knows what's happening to our weather patterns.

What amazing birds! I have never been lucky enough to see one in person. And the antelopes! I have only seen them two times over 20 years during the drive from El Paso to Midland. So dainty and beautiful. I am fascinated by your concrete creations. They are going to add so much to your landscape. "Hardscaping" can really make or break a yard! You are saving a fortune by being able to make your decor yourself. Finally, as to the ground squirrels, what about using fire-rings for your pumpkins? I put mine in fire-rings last year, mainly to stop the dogs from bothering them and wading through them and also to try to foil the squash bugs. I grew the Cherokee Bush Pumpkins so that they would not sprawl all over and let things get at the baby pumpkins.

Hoping that things are getting better for you & your family. Spring is such a beautiful time of year, always a joy to see what will pop up somewhere in the garden. I gathered some Lilac's the other day....so lovely. And the Forcythia are a beautiful bright spring yellow. Thanks for stopping over my place, I appreciate it so much. Those antelope...wow!

And, the light is just so wonderful now. We are giving up on most of our gardening because of fox squirrels. Even an electric fence didn’t save our beautiful patch of sweet corn last year. We put in so much time and work to have it destroyed in a few days. I love your concrete bowls and spheres.

It’s so nice to see that spring is certainly in your backyard, Kathleen. I agree that the yellow band on the birds is amazing as the only other colorful ones I have seen are red winged. The concrete spheres will certainky not blow away in the garden areas and they are unique and colorful. How wonderful to see the antelopes on your walks.

Your garden is perfectly charming and I adore the spheres too. I'm not much for things like Feng Shui but I do believe that there is a natural place where things that you randomly put down look just right. Enjoy the gardening while the mild weather lasts!
