Do you ever feel that the world is whirling around so fast

and causing you to get tired of the ride and you  want to just
hop off........preferring to take a slow walk........
away from all of the "hurriedness" of it all?
(This photo ( by French photographer Willy Ronis)  reminds of how friends used to
get together........)

With all of the social media that we all try to keep
up with .........and with all of the technical do dads that
we all need to keep up with the "hurriedness" .......
it is amazing that we can juggle it all.
For me, I don't juggle as much as others.........
but I have noticed.............
with social media............friends don't call
or email...........they just want a quick chat and
nothing that touches the heart between friends is ever talked about.
It is so easy to just type" hello" " I will pray for you"
instead of actually learning about the issue at hand and taking time to care about what is going on.
It sometimes gets to where a person is just a counted number as a
social media friend .........
instead of being considered a
friend to catch up with over a cup of coffee.
The "hurriedness "of life seems to have taken the
coffee out of friendship.
I love updated things in this world,
my washing machine, my vacuum, electricity,
and let's not forget........indoor plumbing,....and I do love
some aspects of social media.........
but I think I do  not want to
be just  a "social media, head count" friend.
You can find me , however, waiting
with a hot cup of coffee and a listening heart!

Many, many years ago a young high school student here in New Zealand won a speech contest and her title was " Stop the world, I want to get off" I forget her actual words, but that title sticks with me every day. Life in general gets too busy, TV ads suggest we get better, brighter, bolder, and more, traffic goes by so fast even on our quiet street, and last night I heard some fireworks and big bangs going off. I, too, relish a quiet time with coffee and words from friends. Enjoy your day up north, we have a cool morning here at almost 7 a.m. The spring flowers are almost finished, the new almost summery ones are showing some blooms, and all is good in the garden.

A cup of coffee and a listening heart, I like that. I do have a couple friends I have coffee or tea with, that is where hearts can connect, I agree.

I find living in a small town is in some ways living in the past!! : )

OH yes, I think of this quite often. Merle sings, "Are the good times really over..." I would like to think not.

Oh yes, yes, yes! Everything is too busy for me, and I don't even go anywhere. I don't have a cell phone, so don't text or do Facebook. My granddaughter-in-law was showing pictures of her baby girl which were on her phone. And standing right beside me, mesmerized by those imagines, was little 16 month old Emylyn! And then she tapped the phone just as she had seen others do. To me it's just sad to think how much kids are missing by growing up in this time frame; there's not much creativity in their toys, let the batteries or computers do it all while they hold the things in their hands.

I absolutely agree with you! No one has time any more, everyone is so "busy". I'm getting to hate that word. My Mother lived on a farm and raised a family with no indoor plumbing, a gas-powered washing machine, and still had more time to sit and visit with friends or do her embroidery.

I agree that we don't take time for one another. And social media, as good as it is, just doesn't do the trick. I'm lucky that I do go into town about 3 times a week and have coffee with some friends, but as winter approaches I'm not sure if that will be possible. We usually sit around our coffee or breakfast and first do a word puzzle in the newspaper, then the Isaac Asimov quiz for the day, then a mixture of gossip and just visiting as people come in and out. But I need to think of an alternative for the worst winter days.

Perfectly said. I would agree. The Social Graces are disappearing also. New gadgets for a new time. I can't help but wonder, that sometime in the future, that some generation from now, will return to the era of the coffee clatch, and claim it as new and of their own making. Finding it a new and different experience than holding that phone in their hand everywhere they go, looking down, and missing life as it whips past. What's old can be made new again to a new generation.

Oh geez. All my friends are lost now and gone too soon.
All the while my daughter ... even now at 45...she calls a lot of people "friends". I keep reminding her they are not friends but acquaintances. Which one can she call when she needs help..none..that's where her parents come in I guess. I hate FB but must visit daily to see what my grandson across the country is up to though he stays in touch just about everyday. Blogging is my favorite social media platform.

Yes, I often want things to slow down. More and more I don't want to have to deal with people. This picture reminds me of my best friend who is gone for almost 20 years now. We used to enjoy a cup..coffee for me and tea for her..at a little tea room downtown which is also gone. It seems when girls get together now it's at the bar. Too sad.

A big part of what is happening, is people can now work 24 hours a day, if "desired" on their phones and other devices. Many people do not experience true "down time" as they are expected to be checking in, updating, and continue working even long after the work day is done. Some parents spend more time looking at their phones than they do looking at their children. I agree with what you are saying. I wonder if things will ever come back around and experts will be listened to when they tell us that increased screen time is not good for us. -Jenn

I agree, the busyness of the world can be quite overwhelming.

Oh how I agree totally with this post, Kathleen, which is why I treasure and enjoy written correspondences (as you well know). Aside from blogging, I do not use any other social media because it seems it's become a way to many people to avoid more interpersonal communications like phone calls or snail mail notes, cards and letters. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer the personal touches and always will.

I thought you might like to know that the photo you found on the Internet was done by French photographer Willy Ronis. He was born in France in 1910 and died in 2009. He was the first French photographer to work for Life Magazine and was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1953. I love his photographs of my city, Paris, he showed it so well.

Oh, I so agree with you, Kathleen. One thing I'm particularly grateful for though, so far it seems my great grandchildren still love playing outside. They have a means to watch or play games on the t.v. or their mom's phone, but just a bit before bedtime.

I enjoy FB only because I can see pictures of family I don't see 'in person' anymore.

I do so miss they 'old days' though. :)
