There is a weathered old well house that the wind has blown shingles off from the roof .................

and the sun has baked off the paint................
but inside...............although covered in thick dust...........the cement floor is cool even on the hottest days and the water runs sweet and clear. It is not uncommon for me to find that a mouse, a bird, or even a rattlesnake has found it's shelter there off and on. This past week, I found this baby raccoon lying on the floor. There is a hole in the ceiling of the well house, and I could tell that is where this little one fell from. Amazingly, it was not injured. When I picked it up, it was very warm and very full............so I know that the mother was taking care of it.

I scooped it up to enjoy this rare moment of actually getting to hold a baby coon in my hands! Then off to the studio for a picture...............

or two.

If you ever look into your grandmother's photo albums..............there is always a baby photo with their bare bottom showing.............so here is on official baby coon's bottom.............look at that striped tail!

It was so cuddly.................I almost wanted to keep it.................
but I know better. Back off to the well house, where carefully, it was placed back up into the top with the others that  I could hear chirping away in their coon talk. I got on the very top rung of the ladder to just take a look and saw a large furry form.............lying very still, then in the half darkness.............glowing eyes of the mother. I go out to check every day and I hear the moving about and noises above me.............glad that the baby was reunited.
These are the moments in life that I don't take for granted and am forever thankful for.

As most of you know..............I devote much of my planting time to pumpkins and Zinnias.
This year I wanted to try something new. I planted some Dahlia bulbs............and they have sprouted.........

and have bloomed. Their blooms are about the size of a small dessert plate!
How about you?
Do you have any critters dropping by?
What kind of flowers are you growing this year?
I would love to hear!

Definitely!! We have way too many coons and skunks!

I planted dwarf dahlia seeds but none have come up yet. They will make a bulb that can be planted the next year.

Raccoons are just so adorable! I love watching the older ones look for food that I sometimes put out for them on my deck rail. They usually show up to get it around 9:30 p.m.
Your dahlia is beautiful!
Have a great week!

Hello!
I've grown up with raccoons wandering around, and heard the babies on the roof but have never seen one. What a treat. But its the horned toad in your last post I wish I could see. Grew up with those too but haven't seen one in years. I even used to pet them and thought (as a eight year old) they were so peaceful and friendly.
This year I've added a lot of pentstemons to the garden. They love the sun and the shrubs get bigger every year. Really wonderful plants.
Best
Julie

The raccoons are favorites of mine. I save every scrap in what I call the slop bucket and leave it for them every night. The bucket is always licked clean by morning. I see lots of young ones, but never one this small...so glad you have a kind heart.

I had forgotten that you had this other blog and I am definitely following it from now on! I am also an avid nature lover. How wonderful that you got a close up of a wild baby!

what an incredible experience- thanks for sharing! Not doing great with my garden this year - and partly due to the horrible plague of squirrels around here (I live in North Central Texas) they will dig up anything.

My recently deceased father-in-law took great delight in his dahlias and one of our granddaughters also has passion for dahlias and received from great-grandpa his dahlia bulbs. They are what great-grandpa called his "dinner plate dahlias" and he and our granddaughter have won prizes at the local community fair for them. What beautiful dahlias you are raising .

The baby coon is so cute Kathleen !

I have never seen a baby raccoon. Thank you so much for posting. I would have kept it. I Wyoming people used to rob nests and sell the babies. Cruel I know, but they are easy to bottle feed. I am glad the mom took it back and didn't reject it after being handled. Thanks again for showing : )
p.s. my daughters planted Dahlia bulbs but they haven't flowered yet.

That baby racoon just about stole my heart. The only critter I encounter daily is my adorable and funny cat. I grow agave 'flowers' in pots as I am preparing to move into my new apartment in August and getting my pots ready for my small balcony.

How sweet! I'd probably be tempted to keep him, too. Nothing cuter than babies. But, his Mom is better for him. Glad you got some good shots of him!

What a sweet, sweet baby! How precious to get to hold it and then reunite it with Mom and siblings! We had friends years ago who raised two different baby opossums when their mother had been killed by a car. Too cute!
