My Plate Is Full

I so enjoyed reading all of your comments on how your "cup runneth over" on my last post! I always enjoy hearing from all of you.....and now....my plate is full. Seems like this time of year my plate is always more full than usual.....there is so much to get done.
Six days ago a storm blew in bringing with it a few sprinkles of rain, a whole cotton field of dirt and leaving behind these baby birds.....blown out of their nest. We could not reach the nest that was a mile high in the tree.....so every two hours....I have been feeding and caring for these little ones.....my plate is full.......the little one lying down died a couple of days ago, probably injured from the fall....
If you find that you have baby birds to take care of.....Gerbers baby meat in the little jar is what will feed them well. I use an empty plastic syringe that I got from the vet for medication for my animals. Just draw in the baby meat and squirt it down the little birds throat. They eat quite a bit and they need to be fed every two hours, even through the night for the first few days.
I thought at first that these were Mockingbirds....since that is what has been diving down at our cats as they walk underneath the tree.......

but as you can see, they are getting a yellow chest and dark black wings. I sat these two out on a limb today and stepped away to see if any bird might come near. One of the "Baltimore Oriole" type birds did fly up to them, but never returned. They have learned to fly a short distance....but I could not let them stay out in the heat and wind any longer. They have slowed their eating down to every 4 to 5 hours and probably by next week they will be able to be free. They grow so quickly....

speaking of growing quickly..From the hen house...the chicks have grown and will soon be free to roam the pen grounds. I have had to stop being nice to bull snakes and instead of taking them off somewhere else.....I have had to whack them. I have killed 4 snakes in my baby chicks hutch within the past 6 days.......my plate is full!

but from the grounds that surround us, there are the good and gentle snakes....the ones I pick up...

and bring to my youngest son.....who's only trait he got from me is the love of wild things..

Also walking the grounds was this box turtle...

who stopped long enough to pose for a picture and then he was on his way.....

from the pond....the cheap little 25 cent fish that were once and inch long have grown to be quite big....

the wasp have taken refuge to the surface of the pond.....getting some relief from the 106 temperatures....

from the garden, everything is growing......I will soon have fried green tomatoes!

the squash and onions are also doing well......if I can just stay ahead of the weeds! I have worked out in the garden every day from 6 AM to 10 AM and am just now finishing with all of the weed battle......my plate is full!

The flower beds are also starting to come to life, showing their cheery colors.

from my needle.......I have been working on a miniature quilt....and combining my embroidery with it.....if you would like to learn how just click here to visit my embroidery blog....

my plate is full!

from the kitchen, the smell of southern fried chicken is telling me that supper is almost ready and another day is done...... click here for a wonderful Southern fried chicken recipe from my cooking blog...http://countrykitchenkat.blogspot.com/

Abbey is hoping my plate is full because she loves fried chicken too! I always share and she knows it! Now how about you? How do you find your plate being full.......is it full from traveling on vacation this time of year.......taking charge of the kids on their summer break from school......yard work.? I would love to hear!

You certainly have much to keep you busy! Oh gosh--more snakes after the chickens. I don't know how you do it. I would not be able to handle having so many snakes as visitors. YIKES!

Loved the rest of the tour though! :D

Wow, your plate is FULL! I enjoy reading about all that is going on-those little birds and Abbey are so sweet. I love your miniature quilt too. We are trying to stay cool too - it's in the high 90's today.

Yes, your plate is full for sure having to take care of two baby birds. I don't know how you can pick up a snake..you must have a strong stomach and nerves of steel.

Kathleen, I got tired just reading about how full your plate is! But it's fun, isn't it, and I know you wouldn't change a thing (except maybe to cut down on the heat a little?) And it does seem like a full time job trying to stay ahead of the weeds!

I learned something new, Gerbers' baby food , meat, for baby birds. I will remember that if I need to help baby birds along.

I see you too have no fear of snakes, but a healthy respect for the ones that can hurt you. I find snakes very pretty and am amazed they do as well as they do without limbs. ( the curse, for sure )

Fried chicken, done just right is one of my favorite foods, is there any left for me after Abbey gets her share?

It sure does sound like a full plate to me, Kathleen! I'm glad you were able to give the little birdies a chance- hopefully they will make it just fine.
The flowers and veggies look wonderful- despite the heat!

By the way... I wish my plate was full with some of that fried chicken! LOL

wonderful post, I think you might have gotten some rain this week? the snake saga really has me on my toes around here - only way a snake could get into coop is through the open hatch during daylight but evidently snakes are pretty bold. We aren't getting eggs yet so it would be the chickens themselves at risk. Had a cougar kill one of our goat kids recently - unnerving since we are only a couple of miles from town and have neighbors all around. Anyhow - great post and YUM those onions look delicious!

How sweet of you to take care of all the little ones like that, just like their mama would! Your garden is such a beautiful sight, and I'm sure it brings you much pleasure in return. Try to stay cool and enjoy your summer. You sure do have a full plate. :)

Wow your plate is full :) loved seeing the baby birds you rescued and all the animals around your farm too. My plate-full of work, gardening, swimming, contra dancing and trying to keep the family clothed and fed too!

It has been so HOT! I haven't wanted to go weed, so the garden is being overtaken. I don't blame you for whacking the snakes either. I just noticed this morning that I have a biddie missing. I don't think a snake could get in there, but I could be wrong.

Kathleen,
Your fried chicken looks so good. Wish I could drop in for dinner. Those baby birds are so cute, I'm glad you're taking care of them. The box turtle, little snakes, chickens, and animals are adorable. Looks like your garden is doing well. No wonder you have a full plate. I loved the photos and the posting. Thank you for visiting my blog. Blessings!

Your garden is much farther along than mine is! Mine's doing better btw so thanks for telling me what I was doing wrong. lol. See! I told you that you were Dr. Doolittle.

Kathleen, you are just like my hubby. We had four eggs under one of our bantam hens, and only one lived to hatch out. Two others were just hatching out and Mother Hen left the nest and they got too cold to survive. Ken brought them inside and tried to warm them up, but to no avail.
Have you had time to do any stitching lately? I can't wait to see some more of my old linens come to life!

Thanks for the tip on what to feed baby birds. We used to have a bird rehab center nearby to take them - but, sadly, it is no longer there. I wonder if the babies have imprinted on you?

My plate is full with working a full time job, trying to keep ahead of the weeds in the garden, putting fence and gates up in the pasture, having my wonderful granddaughter visit for the week, mowing the lawn, taking care of our animals and trying to learn the art of farming. I love it! I'm so happy that your birds are doing well and Abbey likes fried chicken. I love fried green tomatoes. I have them every time I travel down south.
