Hello....my name is Harry Wolf Spider.....and I am speaking on behalf of myself and other spider companions to Stacey at Childers Corner blog.(You can understand by reading Stacey's post on March 9th, I'm Not A Bug Person).......... Please stop by Stacey's blog http://childerscorner.blogspot.com/ to tell her that I don't mean to scare her and that I am a very helpful and important part of the insect world. Kathleen has tried to calm Stacey's fear of me, so here we go...........Stacey..... dear Stacey.....
to you, I'm scary,
and maybe a little creepy too.
But take the time,
you will see that I'm
a very helpful fellow for you!
the pretty design and color on me,
And though my eating habits are not full of grace,
I keep other pests away from your place.
I can be skinny and rather plain,
I can be colorful and full of vain,
I can be large and powerful, it's true,
And yes, sometimes, deliver a harmful bite to you.......
(but only if you squeeze me, smash me or
tease me!)
Those eight crawly legs that you don't like to see,
are being creative and catching lunch for me.
I'm the finest spinner ever to be seen,
I decorate your garden so lush and green.
God made me look like this it's true,
And he makes me do the things I do,
But one more thing I want you to see,
I'm more scared of you, than you are of me!
"please don't smash me!"

Wonderfully thought out plea - but I think the term irrational fear is just that - folks are irrational about things. I am not a huge fan of spiders in the house - DH has had a long hospitalization due to brown recluse but we often pick up tarantulas and encourage some of the other arachnids to hang around (ha - little pun there). They do a great job getting rid of so many peskier insects!
Kathleen, I must admit, spiders are the one creature that give me the creeps. Reptiles, amphibians , rats and mice do not make me shudder, but the sight of a spider, especially that wolf spider you posted pictures of. I had trouble reading the post with it staring at me!
I too have been bitten by a Recluse, and it took over a year for the wound to heal, and I never, no never harassed the spider. But I admire their webs and pest control, just not in my house or work boots.
Thanks for an eye-opening and slightly scary post complete with poem.
I don't care for spiders-but your spider plea may make me think twice before I squash the next one! So well done!
lol, oh, Kathy, that is so funny! It probably won't keep me from killing them though lol!
Such a cute post but what a scary spider!
I could barely look at those pictures ... trust me, I won't smash you. I'll be staying as far away as possible.
I respect the space of spiders, their just not allowed in my space. I had a scarey experience with a spider spying on me while I was going potty. It looked much like the wolf spider you speak of, I had only a flip flop to defend my territory. The only problem was that when I threw my flip flop at the spider (still sitting on the potty) the spider jumped at me. Needless to say, It didn't take me long to finish up and get out of the bathroom... I'm not one of theose people who are terrified of spiders, but if I spot one the space is all his.
I love it! A poem from a spider. Very creative!
I love spiders. They are so colorful and so very beneficial. I taught my boys at a very young age not to kill them or any other beneficial insects. Now we remove them from the house and put them back outside whenever they get caught inside. Just the other day I had a little spider keep me company on the kitchen counter as I made biscuits. He kept running from under the stand mixer to behind the utensil caddy trying not to be seen!
EEEEeeeeiiiiyyyy............
Must. squish. spiders! Not only did we recently watch "Arachnophobia" (forgot how silly that show was!) but I was also reading about brown recluses (did I spell that right?) AND because we have alot of clay around, we also have alot of spiders!!!! YIKES!
Loved your heart shaped cactus! Isn't God neat?!?!?
Salem got himself a bird! He just needed a little more protein, mom!
Thank you so much for taking us on the walks around your land! I just love all the wildflowers -- do you make bouquets? I also love seeing the treasures you're digging up!
Many Blessings, Miss Kathleen!
Julie
Cute poem--I enjoyed it! I have to tell you though, spiders just give me the willies! The photos you have posted here just gave me the shivers just looking at them! HA!
Enjoy your day, Kathleen! :D
I don't smash spiders, but after a really bad bite (I didn't know there was a spider there until it ran up my arm and bit me). I am more than cautious around them. I was bitten by a cousin to the brown recluse spider and spent a very sick several days and weeks, to then have a hole in my arm.
I stay away from spiders, and snakes.

Ack ! This was really neat...but I am terrified of spiders. If they stay outside where they belong I am ok, but when they get in the house they are toast!!
Last year we had an influx of black widows ~ and you don't want to mess with those!
Dear Kathleen,
I always look forward to your wonderful poems and enjoy them so much! Spiders are great garden friends and I think your poem will convert many people into liking them, or at least not smashing them!
I enjoyed seeing the pretty places you and Sophie walk to and all the lovely finds, flowers, china, old bottles and things! Thank you for sharing.
Love, Paula
Really, really, neat post and an awesome poem! Just loved it. Blessings back to you, Kathleen!
That was wonderful:-) I try my best to round them up and put them out when they get in the house, but I draw the line at black widows... they creep me OUT and I'm afraid I show them no mercy.

I used to have an agreement with a wolf spider. It had a web on the corner of our porch, so I told it I would leave it to do its job, if it would leave me alone. One night, I was leaving the house, & forgot it was there. I brushed against it & it bit me. Made a nasty place that took a while to heal, but I still try to leave them alone, as long as they are outside the house.
Oooooh Kathleen, what a cute post. However, the spiders just give me the heebee jeebees. Don't like it when they invade my indoor space. Only one allowed inside is during Christmas time. I have the Christmas Spider which hangs on my Christmas tree.
Hugs :)
Irma
I won't smash you if you won't scare me, how about that?
Mr. Harry WolfSpider it is a shame that you have gotten such a bad rap since you are such a helpful creature. I do enjoy your art work and love to admire you from afar. Keep up the good work and don't be discouraged by others dislike, I don't believe it is personally directed to you but you do have to admit when you crawl out form nowhere it can be alarming.
spiders can be beautiful creatures, but I'm going to have to insist that they remain outside. If they come inside, they do so at their own peril. Most of them are good guys, but the few who are not...they gotta go!
LOL
Patricia :o)
EGADS! I nearly fell out of my chair, Kathleen! LOL
Cute poem- I don't like them too well, but I like squashing them even less! YUCK!
Hi, nice blog. Yuck and no thanks on the spiders. I scream and run. Then Dad or Mom goes and kills it. I'm terrified to the point that I could hurt myself if one got on me. I let go of the steering wheel once because one dropped out of the visor. If my Mom hadn't been there to grab the wheel and calm me down who knows what would have happened.
your blog is so cute. i just found it this morning and love farm blogs. i love that you keep your stray cats. all of my animals except the horses are strays. regarding the wolf spiders, i had one i called 'charlotte' in my barn, but she only stayed about a month. she was large and i must admit, i touched her with a long piece of timothy just to see what she would do...she just moved away a bit. she knew i wouldn't harm her. good post!
