The Many Jobs of Gideon Rooster

Everyone associates a rooster with waking them up early in the morning with their loud cock-a- doodle-do......even on their days off...
and chasing the hens around the hen house.... and sometimes...we get thrown into the cooking pot.However....I have my side of the story to tell....
My name is Gideon Rooster. Yes, I am the farm's alarm clock, but I have so many other important jobs to do. I am the "guard dog " of my lady friends of the barnyard. I always watch everything that is going on around on the grounds.

This is my main squeeze....Pearl. She is the matching set to me....Kathleen calls us the salt and pepper shaker set of the barnyard.

I keep an eye on the inside and outside of the hen house. If old man coyote or his crawling friend, old man bull snake, come hanging around..... I am ready to fight for and defend my ladies.

This assurance of my protection gets many eggs laid...

and many offspring hatched .

Whether we roam the grounds.....

or walk the hen house fence.... I am constantly on the job, keeping watch over my brood. Each lady is dear to me.

When night gets ready to fall.....

I head everyone back to hay filled nests of the hen house,

and make sure everyone is with me, where we gather for a restful nights sleep. I have an important life.... I am known as the ruler of the roost.....and I am treated like the king!

I love your pictures. I'm anxious to see how my 24 new pullets will do when it comes time for them to lay eggs...still dreary in Washington State!

I agree with Nancy, if he is good at protecting the hens from coyotes..can I borrow him ? My roosters are pretty good at the strutting part, and the crowing, but coyotes? Nope!

Gideon sounds like a responsible mature rooster. I have found that older roosters are better at this than the young ones. The young ones just have one thing on their mind! ;) Nice to meet you :) I found you wandering around looking for more chicken fanciers! Kelly

Oh, Miss Kathleen.......

Your roosters are so pretty!
Our neighbors have roosters and the crow all hours of the day and pretty much ALL day. What is THAT about? I've never lived around chickens before, so I'm wondering if something is wrong with that bunch over there?!?!?

How do you get rid of your ground squirrels? Maybe that would work with our moles???

Blessings,
Julie

Dear Kathleen,
Your rooster and chickens are so beautiful! I love the colors of their eggs. We buy eggs from a family farm and they look just like yours! The yolks are such a bright yellow, too. I hope, one day, to keep chickens of our own. Thank you for sharing! Love, Paula

What absolutely lovely markings and delightful photographs. I have Isa Browns which give me lovely free range eggs everyday, most of which I sell.

I've thought about getting a rooster, but my husband just won't budge. Maybe one day.

"Hi Gideon, I'm Ollie, the head rooster over at FarmHouse Style. I've only got a second here at the computer while my Mom is busy 'Oooing and Ahhing' over the new chicks. I wanted to send you a big Cock-a-doole-do. Being the King of the roost does have it's sweet advantages... but it's not for the faint of heart, especially when there is trouble, hawks and dogs and such. Keep a watchful eye my good man. I guess I better get back to my girls before my Mom comes back up from playing with the babies... she is such a softie."

I really enjoy my rooster. He has calmed down a lot since he and I had a battle, where I won! He has a big job with 15 hens (really too many) just keeping an eye on them must make him exhausted at night.
