Although summer is still lingering with it's hot days and the green color that fills the woods, autumn has eased in with the dark of night coming earlier, bringing with it a cooler breeze.
Commonly growing on the grounds is this sagebrush and each year at this time
it has the little puffy balls. I was surprised to learn that these are like a puffy tumor caused to grow by the sagebrush because of an insect known as sagebrush galls. When small insects start to eat on this brush, the plant grows these balls surrounding and enveloping the larva of the insect.
You can read more about this amazing brush/plant at this link
While the morning glory, zinnia, mandevilla and other flowers are still in bloom,
the golden orbs of pumpkins can be found at every storefront ............
it is autumn.
The hummingbirds are here feeding and storing up for their long journey to Mexico.
Two bobcat kittens have been entering the yard to snatch a wild bird or some unsuspecting creature during the early morning and then returning to romp and pounce with each other around the water trough in the late afternoon.
They play just like domesticated kittens do and are fun to watch. The mother bobcat has come with them to drink while her kittens play . I can't seem to catch a good photo of the kittens, they are too fast for me.
I have taken aside a week each month to read through my collection of cookbooks. This past week I focused on cookbooks that have been gifted to me by our children. So many good recipes to choose from. I selected and marked each recipe that I want to try and have gathered all the necessary ingredients for the pantry and plan to spend the remaining days of the month trying the recipes.
So far I have cooked a very moist and wonderful meatloaf that has a gravy topping instead of the regular tomato/ketchup topping, with a side of seasoned roasted potatoes and a squash tian. For dessert, the peach cake above. All has won the approval of my family members .......so those recipes are marked as "to make again"
I have cooked well over 40 years and in all of those years, there are still spices that I have never used.
With some of the selected recipes, I will now be trying cardamon, horseradish, smoked paprika and chipotle chili pepper. The chipotle chili pepper does cause me some concern.......but it is mostly for just a rub for grilled meat.......so maybe it will not be too intolerable.
Cardamon is for some baked sweetness and the horseradish is for sauces.
Have any of you tried any of these spices? If so, what for and what do you think of them? I would love to know.
Here is wishing you pleasant autumn days ahead!
Falling and whirling, and fluttering down,
Beautiful leaves, all crisp and brown;
Decking the grave where the Summer lies,
Under the grey of the Autumn skies...

Love the closing poem. Your peach cake looks so good.
I use cardamom in a lot of different places I love it. It can used in sweet just like cinnamon or in a savory dish. My pumpkin and apple pie spice mix includes cardamom.
Happy fall
Cathy
That cake looks delicious! And yes, I am so ready for fall and cooler weather. This summer has been especially brutal as far as heat.
I have a recipe for meatloaf that has horseradish. I'll email it to you!
The peach cake looks delicious!! I don't tend to use many spices because my DH just doesn't care for any other than the usual cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.. and garlic of course. I must admit even I didn't care for smoked paprika nor horseradish. I tried Garam Masala but neither of us liked that . I think we're just too old to change the way we eat :)
Just started using smoked paprika myself. How fun to watch baby bobcats. That would be a treat for me. Your cake looked yummy. Happy Fall! Janice
It is 28° here in Rustic (7200') after this cold front came through, brrr, we're ready to head back to FL! I use cardamom a fair amount in sweets and most especially in french toast batter and also just a bit in a savory veggie casserole/quiche. That bobcat is so pretty.
That cake looks delicious. Those baby bobcats are cute. Your flowers are still looking pretty. Looking forward to cooler weather and to colorful fall.
My pantry has a collection of spices, some are well used like cumin, smoked paprika, dry mustard, thyme, rosemary, cinnamon while others are seldom used like mint and hot pepper. Like yourself, Kathleen, I have also been trying recipes using different seasonings. The peach cake looks delicious😋.
I LOVE your posts!! Such a beautiful bobcat. I would love to see her two babies. I have never been one to cook with a lot of spices. I did however buy smoked paprika recently for a recipe but now can't remember what the recipe was. That peach cake looks delicious!
Thank you for your extraordinary pictures... I'm always happy to see a hummingbird in blogland, because we don't have these beautiful birds here.
It's wonderful that you can observe the bobcat family. Beautiful photo.
Your cake looks great. I love baking and cooking. I don't like smoked paprika as a spice at all; I use spices very sparingly... I like to use chili, and I use fresh horseradish for horseradish sauce with cooked beef and sauerkraut.
You can try cardamom in coffee, tea, or mulled wine... It also goes well with lentils or poultry - it has to be used very carefully, better less than too much!!! It also works well in baking, for example, in cinnamon rolls.
Best wishes, and I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your work in the kitchen. Enjoy your meal!

What a great cooking adventure. I make cardamon rolls every Christmas for work. They are wonderful. I also like smoked paprika. I can't to wait to see what else you make. The meatloaf sounds wonderful.
I liked all your photos but the peach cake caught my heart. What a nice time of year this is, so full of possibilities.
