When we first moved to our country home, I saw one of these beautiful
fellows sitting on a fence in our backyard. I thought that perhaps someone's pet bird had escaped and flew out this way. That afternoon, there was a large group of these birds enjoying the water from a mud puddle. After research, I learned that they are the Yellow-headed blackbirds. That was 23 years ago and they still arrive here each year in early spring. Their vibrant color and loud chatter bring such joy! They will only be here for about 3 weeks and then they fly away. Are you having wild visitors at this time of year in your backyard?
Wildflowers across the grounds are starting to bloom as is the devil's claw cactus in my collection.
I tilled the ground and have planted a variety of flower seed.........I hope to show you a large colorful garden of blossoms by this summer. What are you having to bloom in your backyard?
I had a dear friend, who had an antique store out at her country house. She would not allow grass to grow on her yard, instead, it was filled with beautiful blossoming flowers of every kind. She had a really good green thumb and it seemed everything she planted, flourished. She grew lovely California poppies.....some in red, some in orange. What is your favorite flower to grow?
I have planted poppy seeds year after year, but not one has sprouted for me. So the only way at this time to enjoy poppies, is to let my needle bring them to life.
The late afternoon sun made the sky have a lovely rose color the other day
and a golden glow shown through the windows, giving a wonderful light to the rooms of the house. I love the time of day when the sun has an effect like this. What is your favorite time of day......and why?
"Thirty days hath September,"
Every person can remember;
But to know when Easter comes
Puzzles even scholars some.
When March the twenty-first is past
Just watch the silvery moon,
And when you see it full and round,
Know Easter'll be here soon.
After the moon has reached its full,
Then Easter will be here,
On the very Sunday after,
In each and every year.
And if it hap on Sunday
The moon should reach its height,
The Sunday following this event
Will be the Easter bright.

What a full post!! I love all the pictures ( it's no secret that I love flowers). The Poppy embroidery is exquisite!! As to real poppies, I have California Poppies popping up everywhere. Iceland Poppies are a favourite but refuse to grow in my yard. I suppose we just have to accept what will and what will not grow for us.
Now that April is half done there are more and more flowers blooming in my yard. Daffodils are done but now there are Tulips, Leopard's Bane, Anemone Blanda, White Rock Cress, White and also pink Bleeding Heart. I have the wild Bleeding Heart as well and wish that bird that dropped the seeds here years ago had not done so. Contrary to the "regular" ones the wild are terribly invasive. I may have to give up and let them be. I simply cannot get them out.
I hope you have a lovely Easter
Forgot to say that just once in my life I came upon a marshy area filled with a flock of those gorgeous Yellow-Headed Blackbirds. Never saw them again.
The golden blackbirds and the glow through your window are signs of spring coming soon, if not already with you, and the " September days" poem is beautiful. Down here, I have some Louisiana Iris rhizomes to plant, the morn ings are so dark already, and at night the lights go on earlier. This morning at nearly 6 a.m. coffee is made and I relit the fire that still had lovcely hot embers from last night.
I have never seen a yellow-head blackbird, Kathleen, so thank you for sharing the photo and information. What a wonderful sight to see so many! I enjoyed so many flowers when we had a yard in NJ and VA that it would be hard to name a specific one, but pansies were one as well as irises. Your handiwork is lovely as ever and the flowers there will last forever, but too bad you haven't yet "convinced" them to grow in your yard. Perhaps it has to do with the climate or the soil?
Happy Easter wishes to you and your family. Thanks for the beautiful sunset view. My favorite time of day is usually late afternoon.
I have never seen these birds before. Beautiful. My favorite time of the day is early morning, watching the sunrise. That filtered light through the beautiful lace curtain is a stunner. Happy Easter to you . Thank you for poppng over my place.
I have never seen those birds before amazing. I love this post so much I love when the light comes through the lace curtains at the end of the day. But my favorite is early mornings especially in the winter when the sun rises in front of our big picture window. In the summer it is so far over we don't see all the amazing colors. I love your stitching too. I have had no luck growing poppies either and I do love them.
Happy Easter.
Cathy
Love that light through the window. The embroidery is beautiful. I enjoy growing peonies.
Such a beautiful post. Stunning photographs, lovely illustration and message. Happy Easter 🐰 🐣 💓
I sure wish we had those yellow headed blackbirds visit us. We only have the normal blackbirds that stay now until about September. They are nothing to look at and are a drab brown...not even black. Janice
The birds are so pretty - we have red-winged blackbirds here but I’ve never seen yours before! I don’t have luck with poppies either, I wish I did - they are lovely. Favorite time of day, hmmm I do like the shadows of late evening in Fall, early morning is so nice with the chatter of birds, but then so is evening with the “singing” of frogs in the Spring!
What cute little birds! And colorful...
I love your lace curtains!! All my windows have lace...a throwback to my grandmother's house...
hugs
Donna
I love the sound of the yellow headed blackbirds. I've never seen so many together. I have a lot of favorite flowers: forget-me-nots, delphiniums, hollyhocks, and violas. I just bought some orange violas today. They smell amazing. Enjoyed seeing how life is at your end of the world.
