Now Comes November

The days are shorter now and the skies have been more overcast

with grey and purple clouds, with patches of blue peeking through. There is a chill
in the late night that continues into the early morning hours all the way
up till sunrise.

The winged v shape of the Sand Hill Cranes fill these skies,
their calls carrying for miles across the prairie and fields.
These birds always fill my heart with awe...........and I
really cannot put a finger on the reason why.....
but each time, towards this time of year, my ear is anxiously
awaiting to hear them.  Perhaps it's their arrival that is the final notice that
summer has left us and that the wonderful days of autumn are here. As if
they pulled this blessed season in on their wings.  I truly love this time of year.
The flowers in the garden are still lovely
and full of butterflies
and the trees are still dressed in green......although
I do see a hint of yellow here and there.
As I write about my love for the fall season, I am eagerly
snipping and collecting flower seed with the plans of planting garden
spaces filling my mind in looking forward to next spring.
I am sure you feel the same as I when I say there is such an excitement
in planting seeds to watch them sprout and bloom.  I place the seed pods
into brown paper bags to allow them to dry thoroughly
and then I place the seeds into bottles or jars.
There is one "volley ball" size pumpkin still growing on a
very tired and weary pumpkin vine.  The pumpkin will
either sit on the porch for a decoration........or
it may just be perfect for a pie or two.
Now is the time to enjoy an outside fire on the patio and to
sit out into the night gazing in fascination
up at the moon or into the star filled dark canvas of the sky.
The warmth of the fireplace inside gives comfort with the crackling
sound of the burning logs as the wind outside howls.
It is also the time for family and friends.......scattered across the miles,
to come and gather in the comfort of food, happy catching up, along with
good memories in the making.
My thoughts also gather upon those I used to know who have gone on
but who have left behind some of the sweetest memories.
Here's wishing you lovely autumn days and a Thanksgiving
full of happy times made with  memories for years to come.

Beautiful pictures sums up this time of year perfectly. Hasn't that moon been lovely the last few nights? Stunning.

Pink Cosmos and is the blue Morning Glory? There is something special about the leaves as they change, gathering gold for autumn. Although yesterday was so hot, this morning a cool breeze, grey clouds skudding across a paler grey sky.I always marvel that the very same sky down here is just a part of the one you see up North.

It was nice to find this new post, Kathleen. It's nice to read that you have been having lovely autumn days. The monarchs on the flowers were wonderful to see as we saw so few of them here this spring and summer. nearly all of the foliage colors have gone now thanks to some rainy and windy days, but it is still lovely to see the leaves on the ground when I walk. The weather has been very unseasonal and warmer than expected, but soon winter will arrive.

Sending all good wishes to you and your family for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Yes, we will also remember those family and friends who are no longer with us to celebrate.

Such a great shot of the full moon. Your blue Morning Glories and Cosmos and butterflies are a real treat for the eyes. The only blue around here is the sunny sky. We are so fortunate with gorgeous weather but all the flowers are finished since we had frost.

Happy Thanksgiving. Stay well and happy.
Hugs,
Julia

Autumn is a wonderful time, far too short I find. This far north (compared to you) those soft days last barely through September and October. Already we've had killing frost and rain/snow.
One thing remains the same and that is the moon. Well, it doesn't remain the same but what I mean is you and I see the very same moon.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Your flowers are still amazing! A whopping 29* here this morning but I have a couple hollyhocks still trying. And oh the saying on that little card ~ didn't they write the most meaningful sentiments? Thank you for sharing.

What a beautiful post, Kathleen! We are seeing a lot of the same things here. More butterflies here this year than I've seen in a while! I know that gardeners are the most optimistic people. We always believe next year will be better.

I love how you make it feel like you are wrapped in a warm blanket with your words…

I would love to clip each one of your pictures, with your words too, and make them into a little book. Your post is just beautiful. Like reading a beautiful card. I use those brown lunch bags for drying seeds too. This year not one of my cosmos seeds came up. I am already looking forward to gardening next year.

Your description of November is spot on...it seems all of sudden the colors in the trees are gone, the flowerbeds are empty, but it's still warm here. I say that because today's 60 degrees will be dropping to the 30's next week with nights in the teens. That's okay...time for Mother Nature to rest, and us as well. Tell me how long do you keep your seeds in a paper bag before putting them in jars? I have a few I'd like to hang onto and see if they'll bloom again next year...thanks so much, Mary

Beautiful photos!

Yes, Thanksgiving is coming soon; things being up in the air here. Not sure what we'll be doing but one thing I know, I'm very thankful!

Your flowers are lovely!

This post makes me so happy, generally and for you in your lovely country setting. You help me to appreciate my own views and experience of fall progressing and winter coming on. As fast as summer has gone, so fast will these quieter seasons of dormancy pass, and new shoots will be coming up in the garden.

I have never seen or heard sandhill cranes, though they come through the area where my daughter lives, so maybe someday. Your pictures of everything are evocative. Thank you very much!
