Farewell Sweet Sophie

When you first decide to get a puppy, or a dog, you get yourself prepared for the big change that wonderful creature will bring into your home.  You are excited and anxious to begin this new adventure.
Then as the days slip into years, you are delighted at the joy and comfort this furry, big eyed, tail wagging, companion has brought to "what used to be"  just an ordinary day.
It has always amazed me at how dogs are always happy to see you when you walk in the door, even when you have gone in and out that door 3 times for the past 30 minutes......each time you walk in, it's a great welcoming party......just for you.....because you are loved by them!
And when we are not so understanding of their mistakes, they love us anyhow and never remember ........and forgive us for our mistakes.......... All of this and so much more, we can learn from just having a loyal dog in our life.
But no matter how many times I have gone through the death of a beloved dog,  I am never prepared for when that day comes.  We go to the vet, I am told about how old and fragile our sweet dog is, .........and I can make a dreadful decision........at that moment.  But no, we take her back home  with a handful of magic pills and dog food, (that she really does not like), and I  think, in just a few days, she will be back to eating and playing........and we will still have a good bit of time with her in our life.
And then, the day comes, when you realize, your happy dog is very ill and you have to sign this dreadful paper at the vet's office to allow such a sweet life........to be ended.
This happened today.........our sweet Sophie is gone.   I held and hugged her as the vet administered the shot........and that sweet brown eyed girl that was so full of life and love, within seconds, went down like a feather in my arms.......without a sound.
And the happiness that we have known for the past 14 years floated away with her sweet spirit.
Some day, when my time comes for me to leave this earth, I hope that wherever it is we go, that I will hear her bark and see her happy face and wagging tail .....
welcoming me as I open that door and walk in.

So sorry about your dear Sophie. Losing a beloved pet is so very hard. Each time I've had to bring an old pet to the vet for the last time, I've cried like a baby. The last ones were extremely difficult and I've decided that I can't do it anymore. But I know, never say never... Maybe someday, who knows, I may change my mind.

Sending you warm thoughts.
Hugs,
Julia

I am so sorry - that is one of the hardest things we have to do.
May her happy memories comfort and help you through your sadness.

You are the 3rd or 4th person I know of this week who has had to deal with this issue. My sympathy is with you as I tear up with each hearing. They bring so much to our lives 💕

O Geez, I could have written this about two months ago when we took Bosco to the vet. Kidney failure. We could try this pill and that pill. No, I said I did that once and promised myself I would never try to keep a dog alive to soothe MY soul. This time was harder than some in the past. Though we still have two little pains in the a** of the Min Pin variety, I know that Bosco is my last new dog as well as my last BIG dog. See, I know your pain and can only hope, like you, that I will see my beloved pets again some day.
xx, Carol

I am crying. I'm so sorry for your loss. There is nothing anyone can say that eases the hurt. I've been there more times than I care to remember. But, like you, I am so happy and thankful for all the good years and vast amount of unmerited love that has been my lot as caretaker of these wonderful creatures. As far as I know, dogs are about the only creatures on earth who gift us with unconditional love.

I can't even see to type-I guess you know how I loved your dog and what she meant to me-she 'helped' me get back to painting so many years ago...I'm so sorry. Your loss is very deep. God comfort you.

My Dear Kathleen, popped in to visit here, I am crying for and with you of Sophie, I am sorry. You have so many pictures, memories logged of her, but the close relations you shared, you will miss her always, but it will come to not be so sad as the time passes. As you know, though 2 years have passed, I still miss my Elsie May Sunshine, and cry sometimes, but it is not as sad as it was. and so many wonderfuul blessed memories of her. Sending daily hugs to you. Much love.

And, we all cry and cry, and say we never want another dog. It does hurt so terribly bad, but then there will come another to fill that terrible void in our aching hearts.

Kathleen, I am late in sending condolences on the passing of your beloved pet, Sophie. I know how special a companion she was to you on outdoor excursions and that the hole in your ❤️ will take time to mend. Many of us had to make the same decision when that time had come, and it is never an easy one, even if it is the right one to ease suffering and pain. Be well and take time to heal, my friend

Sorry to hear of your sweet Sophie. We have a Spanky, and he is 15. He still hops around like a pup at dinnertime, but sleeps most of the day to be able to do it.

I just stumbled upon your blog...so sorry to read this news. Dogs do become such a part of our lives and our families. It's heartbreaking to lose them. We lost ours in the late summer a couple of years ago and I said no more, it's too hard...then a stray found it's way into our barn, so frightened and with no one. It was meant to be, she's the kindest soul. Wishing your comfort, Mary

I too share the pain of your loss. We have had only three dogs in our forty years here, the first being an Alsatian that lived for 9 years, followed by two terriers who lived for 18 and 16 years. After that we were too old to care for dogs (we both believe dogs need lots of walks outside of the back yard), but we have kept cats - six of those, two are still with us, 12 years and 4 years old respectively. All our animals are our children (we have no human kids) so when they have died, they have taken a piece of our hearts with them.
