The words " I think a skunk might have sprayed Sophie"

jolted me out of my sleepiness in the early morning hours.
How I wish I was just dreaming ..........
but no.........
before I could force my eyes open to see my husband standing over me........
I could smell that horrible smell drifting in from the open back door.

I hurriedly dress and rush outside to find a very sad and heavily slobbering Sophie,,,,,,
sitting on the patio.....head down........eyes blinking......and tail thumping .........
as if to say "  I know I was not supposed to chase that thing!"
This has been the one major worry I have out here.............SKUNK SPRAY
I have seen this skunk on the patio at night and I have constantly warned my husband and son to "watch out for that skunk" and
"don't let Sophie out until you make sure the skunk is not there"
well........it happened..........
I  have always heard..........tomato juice is the remedy.........
I am 30 minutes away from any store and all I had on hand were two small cans of tomato sauce.
Nothing is more yucky than to be out on a still darkened patio.......in hot, humid weather..........
not even having time to brush my teeth........or my hair.........standing there with a really stinky dog........rubbing tomato sauce into it's fur.......yuck, yuck, yuck.........
while my husband......hurries.........and I do mean hurries off to work.........
leaving me ........to deal with this.............mess.
And just for your notes...........TOMATO SAUCE DOES NOT WORK!
My son researches for me and finds that hydrogen peroxide,  baking soda, and dish soap does the best.
Luckily.........I keep a lot of that on hand. The baking soda/peroxide  mixture I use on my vintage linens to get stains out.
And  I am forever washing dishes.
So
If your dog gets sprayed.........dump the baking soda all over and then pour the peroxide all over that, then the dish soap......... and work into the hair. Rinse and repeat. Then bathe the dog in dog shampoo and
you have a very squeaky, odor free, and stain free pooch!
And .........no ..........Sophie is not blonde from it all
After all of the drama, I came out of the bath to find Sophie......
barking in her sleep..........
chasing that skunk in her dreams no doubt .

The very next morning I found this young owl sitting on the floor of the garden well house.
If you remember, I had posted earlier that the owls have made the old weathered well house a nesting place.
This is the second or third batch of owls that have hatched this year............ It had fallen from the hole in the ceiling . It had pin feathers all over it.........not quite ready to fly and unable to get back up into it's nest.
I needed to get a step ladder from the house to be able to reach the nest.......and I did not want to leave the owl just sitting there..........I knew that it would go hide behind all of the junk in there ..............and I did not want to dig through it all to find it. So I scooped the owl up and brought it into the house with me......to find the ladder
It remained calm and just kept looking up at me with those big dark eyes, while it's foot had a tight clutch on my fingers.

back into the well house, I stepped up to place the owl back into the rafters. I could hear the mother owl thumping around up there and I was worried she was going to get me.
I placed the young owl onto the top of the sheet rock and it let go of it's grip  on my fingers and walked into the darkness of the hole

I could not get high enough to poke my head in to take a look at the mother, so I just put my camera up through the hole and snapped this photo.
Since then, I have seen the young owl......peering at me through the hole , but ducking away when I say hello. A wildlife rehabilitator told me that the the owl should stop hatching out young by late fall......so hopefully, at that time,  we will be able to repair the well house and keep the wild life out.
To say the least........it has been a very exciting week........
whether I wanted it to be or not!

Hello Kathleen,

Poor Sophie, she probably thought she was being turned into a hot dog with the covering of tomato sauce, so glad you were able to wash out the smell. She won't be chasing after skunks again I am sure. The owl photo's are a real treat, you are so lucky that the Mum let you put the little one back. There is always something happening at your place with the wildlife. Have a great week.

Happy days.
Bev.

Our Miggs got sprayed right in the face last year by a skunk soo bad she was slobbering drooling and sneezing and it made my eyes burn when she came near me , it took almost a year to finally get rid of the stink out of her fur and that was using everything even taking her to the groomers and getting her cleaned up there and shaved . It was a nasty old stinky skunk that got our Miggs YUK ! Hope your dogs skunk smell doesn't linger like ours did ! Oh what a cute and pretty owl hope all os ok with him soon . Thanks for sharing , Have a good week !

A very entertaining post! Though it doesn't sound very interesting for you! I always fear one of our animals getting sprayed, but fortunately, knock on wood, not yet. Thanks for the recipe though just in case! I'm fascinated by the owl though, what an amazing experience! That one i could handle! Here's to a less eventful week!

Oh my gosh - what a time y'all have had! Well, I guess I should have said what a time YOU have had since hubby was off to work. You are much braver than me - truly, to have a baby owl in your actual hand! Bless you, my friend! :)

Oh my goodness!! I hate to smell skunks and we have dogs that will kill one if it gets in the yard, so we have the awful smell often. I've never had to give the dogs a bath, but it's good to know what will remove the odor, just in case I get sprayed :)

Well, just wait till you retire, and then all the fun starts, but maybe by then ladder climbing is out. Your wee owl is so lovely, sorry the skunk stink was there, squeaky clean, well done.

Oh no! Poor Sophie, and poor you for having to deal with it! I'm glad you found a remedy that washed away the skunk smell. The baby owl is so cute. Good for you on getting it back to its nest. I would have been afraid of the mother owl too!

Okay, I must have a twisted sense of humor but, this made my day, such an enjoyable funny story! I literally laughed out loud at the visual of your husband heading out the door! What interesting adventures you and your critters get up to...... We have skunks around here too, Cappy's had a couple of close encounters, never a full on dousing. I too have used tomato juice...what a mess! I will remember your recipe for future reference & I'm gonna try the peroxide and soda on old stains too!

How fascinating about the owl....I have never seen one up close. I'm surprised the mother owl did not attack you...

Poor Sophie! Glad you, your son and google found a solution. And how sweet is the owl! You see all sorts of things out on your land, don't you? Good and bad.

Oh this was a wonderful post! Sophie still looks a little embarrassed! You are so lucky to have held an owl!!!! What a great adventure you had!

Thanks so much for the tip on skunk smell removal! I think owls are so adorable and I have a small collection of them. Not real ones! lol

Yes, country life at its best! The skunky dog...oh how I remember that! :-) You're right that tomato juice doesn't work, and I had heard of the other "cure" but couldn't remember it....now I know. I have used peroxide and baking soda on my stains ever since reading about it on your blog! Anyway, though, I loved that you got to have a close encounter with the young owl! So exciting to have them nesting there!

Oh gosh, I am so sorry for Sophie...sometimes it takes us more than one opportunity to learn our lessons, eh? Sadie, my Rhodesian Ridgeback, has been sprayed twice...slow learner or, rather, tricked by Sam P. Spade, Secret Agent, into being sprayed...ahem. Fortunately, I don't mind the smell of skunk spray...good thing as dogs and I sleep together. However, I do hate the smell of dead skunk.
At first I shampooed but that was too much trouble, now I simply wipe with Dawn...that stuff is amazing, it's good for almost everything!

I have never had a dog get sprayed. Thank Goodness... Nice to know what does work though. Poor Sophie and you... That is cool about the owl. Such excitement around your house...
