for me to run errands or to buy groceries. So I always try to stay "stocked up" with the basic ingredients in my pantry. However, sometimes, I forget........today........was one of those days. I forgot to buy aluminum foil. I use strips of foil to place on the edge of my pie crust.........because if I don't, the crust always gets too brown.
I already had my pie mixed and poured into my crust when I realized my shortage.........and then I remembered seeing a wise old cook on TV one day, who prepared and baked a whole chicken .............placed in a brown paper bag.........in the oven! It came out looking wonderful and the brown paper bag never burned. Luckily, I had a brown paper bag in storage and cut strips of it and placed it on to the top of my pie crust edge.
I then placed it into the oven and baked the pie , for the required amount of time.........and look!!!.........a beautiful, perfect crust !!
As my family devoured the pie...........I was thrilled at my new discovery, and promptly wrote down aluminum foil on my grocery list............how about you??
Have you any special baking hints on what you do when you run out? I would love to hear.
Look at this....................that's right !...........it's mud !!!! Thank you all for your prayers for Texas, and for me as I whined about not having any rain. The biggest , blackest cloud pulled up and just sat over the farm grounds........for over an hour and a half..........dumping 2 inches of much needed rain !!
Since I was relieved from watering duty the next couple of days, I put my crochet hook to work and made some plaid pot holders. Now back to that pie................pumpkin..........is there any thing better??
What is your favorite type of pie?

Great tip!
My favourite is the one in front of me!
We thank GOD for his blessings of rain and pray for more to come your way.
OH YUM on the PIE! I love coconut cream but have not had pie in years. NOW you have my mouth watering.
Awesome idea and to hear about baking a chicken in a paper bag. Will have to look that up.
I do have one, I needed a funnel and could not find mine anywhere. I had a 2 liter club soda bottle, I cut the top off about 4" from mouth of the bottle upward. Made and still makes a great funnel.
Kathleen, that pie looks SO good! And what a good idea. I love to find ways to make what I have on hand work. It's not far to a store here, I just don't like to go. LOL
Those pot holders really look good, too! And so glad you got rain. We're still waiting....
I never had Pumpkin pie as a kid, we always had Sweet Potato, Blueberry, and Apple..
Your pie looks delicious...I'd like a slice of that right now:o) I made sweet potato fluff today Cecil loves it...
I'm not a real pie fan...although I think the LOOK Delicious...but I guess Pecan would be my favourite!
Cool blog!!
We are thanking the Lord with you
and hope you receive more rain
which I know you need badly...
Great tip with the brown bag
Good-By to Foil "=_)
Thanks for sharing...

How wonderful that you finally got rain; we're cooler now since we had rain and it seems almost like fall.
I like fruit pies with ice cream; I like cream pies with ice cream. Are there any other choices? ;) And pumpkin pie doesn't have to wait for Thanksgiving; it's good anytime of the year!
I'm so glad you got some rain, Kathleen!
Loved your tip~ I'll have to remember that. I love all pies, but sweet potato pie and pumpkin pie can't be beat!
RAIN!!! Wonderful! Good for you and for the cotton farmes! YAY!!!!

You're very clever, Kathleen! That worked really well for you.
I'm so glad to hear you got some rain at last!
Pie--I like cherry or chocolate/peanut butter. YUM!! :D
And now we can save a few cents when we make a pie! I'm always out of something, I would have to learn a lot if I lived a distance from a store. I'm so glad you got rain. Pretty crochet!
Hi Kathleen, favorite pie is pumpkin and then apple and blueberry...like far too many of them! Great tip on the aluminum foil substitute. This weekend, I fried eggplant and used a tip read about in Cook's illustrated and will describe it in a post later this week.
Very cool. I was sure you were going to say you crossed aluminum foil off your list. So glad you got rain (and mud)
Oh..forgot to mention that we have the same problem here with long trip to go to any stores and I hate it when I need something and don't have it. Have an erasable board on fridge and keep a running list for when we go to town..we live in town with 50 population :)
Hello Kathleen
Oh I am so pleased you have had rain, you will notice the growth of your plants in the next few days.
Your pie looks delicious. Years ago as a child my Aunty used to make lots of meringues and pavlovas, this was the days before baking paper, she used brown paper instead.
Happy days to you and your family Kathleen.
Oh forgot to say love the crochet, interesting pattern.
My favorite pie is a home baked cherry pie. Well, necessity truly is the "mother of invention" as proven by you, successfully so !
Praise God, rain for Texas. Now maybe a little sunshine for Washington?
Wow, I am impressed!! And your pie looks fabulous. Yumm. Pie.
It's been raining around here too finally! Not enough to be MUDDY but beggers can't be choosers!
Wow! You make your own pie crusts, don't you! I've had some nasty experiences with pie crusts. We love pumpkin pie! I guess our favorite is apple with cranberries.
But I can't keep a pumpkin around. Too easy to slice a piece and slide it out and eat it without leaving a saucer to prove you've been there!
So glad you got the much needed rain!
Deb
So happy for you and for my friends in TX that you finally got some rain! What a great idea for the pie crust! The pie looks scrumptious! And I loved the potholders! Hope to see you soon....we've moved to AZ now and made a stop in TX....check out my latest posts on A Colorful World (nothing new on Piece-fulness yet!)
Kathleen,
I'm so grateful Texas finally got rain! You pie looks so delicious. That was a real good tip. I'll remember it. Your croquet sure is pretty. I love all kinds of pies especially pumpkin pie around fall with all of the spices.
Great 'make do' tip! Another use for a grocery bag, is that after the Thanksgiving turkey comes out of the oven, let it rest inside a brown bag. It comes out so moist. I'm glad to hear you finally got some much needed rain! Please send us some here in Georgia..we're parched! Your pumpkin pie looks delish. It's my absolute favorite too!
Thanks for sharing.
That is so exciting about your rain and about your pie! You know, I went to someone's house for dinner recently and she made fish and veggies in individual lunch sacks and threw them all in the oven. I had never seen that before.
That pie looks great! Thanks for the tip. I'd have thought the paper would burn in the oven but then, parchment paper doesn't burn. ?? As for my favorite pie, it's definitely apple. I'm a simple kind of gal, I guess!
Yeay for the rain!!
I'm so glad (relieved!) you finally had rain!
And that pie looks absolutely scrumptious!
