The cool weather is making

the leaves of the lonely little oak tree turn to a beautiful red. I say this tree is lonely because it is by itself in the back, by the tool shed door. There is only one other tree like it on the grounds and it is out in the front. I would love to be able to plant more of these trees, plus other varieties of shade trees all over the grounds........................
maybe one day if I win the lottery...................if I ever played...........
The acorns are also all over the ground and I wonder.............would these sprout??
Do any of you know? Have you tried sprouting them?
I would love to hear!

Hi Kathleen, I don't know if they sprout or not! If I had your green thumb I would at least try it...who knows maybe they would in your Green house...good luck with it ...Ginny

That is a beautiful tree, Kathleen. I've never tried to sprout an acorn, but I would think they would. You could always try soaking one in water and then planting it to see if it will grow. :-) Wishing you a beautiful Sunday.

Dear Kathleen, they do indeed sprout! The squirrels keep me busy chasing them out of the yard as they bring acorns from across the street and bury them in my flower beds. Obviously I don't catch all of them, because I spend the summer pulling up oak seedlings. It would take some years to get a big one grown of course. I'll never be here that long!

Yes, they do indeed sprout, and it really does not take so very many years for them to grow into trees. The next person could enjoy them, even if you weren't still there.

I have a bucket full of sprouting acorns! I have to pinch off the roots so I can make them into acorn napkin rings!
I love the acorn image you posted!

Hello Kathleen,

I think you will be planting them for the next generation. That is the good thing about trees. Have a go and let us know how you get on.
Happy days.

Hi Kathleen! You bet they'll sprout! I'm pulling up seedlings all year long under my oaks. We've got several different varieties (all native) and they are sprouting everywhere. I don't know if you should try to sprout it inside or in a pot of plain ole dirt outside. That's where it would winter anyway. And altho oaks grow slowly, it'd give you pleasure to know that they'd be there for the next ones to come! Besides, some of them DO grow a little faster! Can't hurt to try them out!

I would think they would sprout. You can tell if you have little sprouts close by.

Kathleen,
The oak tree sure is pretty. I like acorns, too. I don't know of acorns sprout or not, but it wouldn't hurt to try. I sure hope you have a wonderful week.

I agree with Ginny, with your green thumb it is sure worth a try to sprout and grow your own! Beautiful, the gifts God gives through the trees He has created. The leaves and acorns are as art to me too.

Pretty colors! I would think they would sprout, but I've never intentionally tried. Our pecan tree always had lots of volunteers around it.

Yes, they do sprout. The squirrels are always busy planting them - and we have lots of baby oak trees...

Here's a link you might enjoy on sprouting acorns:

I'm not sure if the acorns will sprout, Kathleen, but it would sure be a neat experiment!
Our beautiful colors are just about gone.... we've had some pretty hard winds lately that has carried them all away.

Yes, they do sprout, are slow growers and can take 50 years before producing any acorns (depending on the variety0. Go for it, you could at least watch it mature and know that someday, someone else will enjoy the beauty you planted...
Good luck!

Our new house has lots of mature trees so I wonder how many of those will produce acorns!
