The cool night air turns damp and frigid in the early morning hours and awakens me from the open bedroom window. The mesquite tree is getting tired of her green leaf dress and is ready to shake it off and to hide under her winter blanket for a long nap. Nature has also ushered her creatures along to warmer places or to their winter hideaways.
The nests that were once full of fluff from the cotton fields and feathers from Mother Wren, have gone barren and empty..............
The weathered old birdhouses that hang throughout the grounds have once again become weathered,....where once came the sound of cheeps.... only silence....as they hang motionless in the fall air.

The bustling family of woodpeckers , who survived harsh, strong winds and peering cats, have grown up and flown away....leaving the old tree hollow and quiet.

The wasp's nest have fallen to the ground, light and empty...blowing along with the wind.

Only a few creatures hang on to the remaining sunny days and to the flowers that still bloom here on the farm...... they are such curious creatures........their backs shining like jewels in the late afternoon sun. I too, have grabbed a soft blanket from my closet, and have lowered the window. Yet, I enjoy the cool voice of fall, speaking of harvest time to yet come and of her cold sister Winter, on her way to visit.
Have you pulled out sweaters and blankets already? Have you enjoyed a crackling fire yet?
I send you warm wishes on this chilly afternoon!

Hi Kathleen, A lovely post today and I love all your photos. We have had a few chilly days and I've freshened our blankets. I notice the pets are snuggling a little closer these days too! Our trees are just beginning to get some color, and we have a few black eyed Susans and roses hanging on. We've also enjoyed a bowl of hot oatmeal for the first time in a while. I wish you a wonderful weekend full of all the things you love.

Such a great post - and yes the blankets have come out! We had gas logs installed in our fireplace years ago and I just flip the switch and have a fire every morning before work and as soon as I get home. I really miss the crackling sound though and the smell ~ ahhhhh, that makes me think of really cool fall nights! ♥

What a beautiful post, you have a "way with words" for sure! I miss the birds too, one hit my window last night, it had a yellow breast and some red on it's head, a big bird. I picked it up and placed it on a chair, it was breathing heavily...this morning it was gone.. I love the birds. And yes my extra blankets are on and the fire has been going. It's around 20* in the mornings. (new post, come say hi :D )

Thank you for the beautiful post. You have a wonderful way with words. Yes we have had several fires in the woodstove in the kitchen and the gas logs in the living room bring such a nice cozy feeling. Fall is here and I am enjoying every minute. I love the change in seasons.

Ahhh your pictures alway a balm for my eyes and heart.

We came home from the fair to a fired up wood stove. Dirt used the excuse of needing to burn after servicing but we haven't stopped lighting fires in the evening or first think in the morning.

Kathleen, you really have a way with words, girl. How beautiful! It was 87 or so here today with wind and hot balmy air. It's 'spose to change tomorrow I think. I've pulled out a couple of throws and washed them and laid them on the backs of the couches just to be ready for that chill.

Hey, what in the world kind of bug is that? I've never seen one of those before???

Loved this post...like the words...cold sister winter. Not sure I would like to be the "Cold Sister".
I am ready for the wasps to stop bothering the kids in the back yard. Every night this week i get in bed and say, "Yikes, we need to put our flannel sheets on." I crack myself up...like He would ever think of changing sheets.

What a lovely, poetic and beautifully illustrated post!

It's just beginning to get a little cool here, in NJ, though not cool enough for the woodstove, yet.

It is definitely getting cooler here. 39 degrees this morning. I had to wear a sweater and two hoodies for my walk last night! Have a wonderful week, Kathleen! :)

I know what you mean... last week it seemed like fall had skipped us entirely with days in the 40s! This week the temps are back in the 60s during the day. I need to get those last couple of outside chores done!!
