Tools Of The Past

I love vintage outside tools, don't you?
I am drawn to them whenever I see them at flea markets. This set belonged to my "Sweetie's" grandparents.
I love the thick
wood and metal handles.....

and their unique shape. I love the old square rimmed shovel .......

Do any of you remember one of these.....or mowing the grass with one? When we lived in town, we had a small yard and I wanted to be the one who took care of it. However, I could never get the lawn mower to start. I wore my arm out pulling on that string thing. While visiting one of my favorite antique places, I saw this old mower leaning against the front porch. I bought it for $10 and mowed my lawn for years with it. Everyone laughed, but I was really skinny back then! It is one of my favorite pieces.

When we moved out here, this old wheel barrel was lying out by the well house, left behind by previous owners......it was missing a wheel and not being used. I carried it down and placed it in front of my greenhouse where now it is full of morning glory. I can just picture the blooms and vines hanging off of this this summer, can't you?

I also love old inside "tools" as well. This is an old Sunbeam mixer that I bought at a flea market years ago. It still works, although I have retired it and use my Kitchenade mixer. I still love the way the body looks on this old piece.........

and the unique options printed on the rotating end.

It has a juicer.....

that worked wonderfully the last time I used it.....many years ago. It also has white milk glass mixing bowls.

Another favorite it this old toaster, which belonged to my grandmother. Isn't the design on the outside pretty?

The inside is still in good condition.

Another thing I used because I am a"weird vintage gal" is this cake and pie carry along. I spotted it at flea market and toted it to all our family get-togethers. I just love this pink color!

The pie goes on top, and the cake goes into the bottom container. Now I have tupperware to do this job for me.

These old sifters are wonderful as well and I still use them now and then. They hold a good amount of flour.....

I love the cheery knobs on them!

Do you remember how good milk tasted coming from a glass bottle? I still feel that way about beverages in glass or plastic. Glass just seems to make it taste better.

I love the look of this old scrub board..........however, I am so THANKFUL that I have my washing machine!

Even though the instructions on this make it sound like such a wonderful thing to use, sometimes it's good to modernize. Now....tell me.....what vintage tool (inside or out) do you remember most? Did you have to work with it or did you watch Mom or Dad work away with it? Do you have a vintage tool tucked away somewhere? I would love to see and hear!

Okay, that's scary! Do I remember? Yes, those things that are now called antiques are what I grew up with! Thanks, Kathleen, with just having a birthday yesterday, that truly brought back a bit of nostalgia and I take pride in celebrating these gray hairs and revisiting your treasures.

i love your post today!!
Old tools are the best. I'm saying that right now because I just bought a small-headed shovel last week, broke it today working in the flower beds.... uuugghh. They don't make them like they used to!
My hubby's Grandma still uses one of the push mowers. It's so cute watching her use it. She won't allow us to help... very independent!
Love your wheelbarrow. We have an antique claw foot tub in our side flower bed. My daughter has been cleaning in out to plant her own little garden in. Right now it has some wild daisies in it but she wants to plant her own things.

I forgot to tell you, I also have to drink out of glasses. Glass is definitely better than plastic!! Especially my milk, has to be out of glass.

Hi Kathleen - yep, love them old tools. We have collected several and have displayed them proudly around our garden shed. Princess says it's too cluttered, but we like it. I'll have to show some of my pics sometime! I do have a couple of old wagons, one red and one green planted with petunias and cosmos right now...

I'll give you $20 for all of it.....LOL!!!! Yeh Right!!! What wonderful items you have. Very unique. I love old sutff too. We have a GREAT flea market down here and you can find all sorts of goodies like that out there. I have tons of my grandpas old tools. A log picker upper thing, shovels, hoes, potato diggers...all kinds of stuff. A 26 gallon crock that he made pickles in....still not sure what to do with that yet...any ideas?

I'm glad I stopped by to go back in time with you. Yes I remember most of the tools - some are strange but great posts.

I do not own many if any antiques, seeing yours makes me want to be more watchful of them. Then I'd have to write you and get suggestions as to where to display/stash them.

Great Post! Blessings.

I love things like that too. My grandmother just gave me her old stand mixer and I love it. I have her old hand mixer and old iron too. I used to have several pairs of her old high heeled shoes that she wore to work back in the 60's.

I love the pictures of the old yard tools! Just think of the hard work and sweat that was put into using them.
My son bought a pair of vintage hair clippers at a yard sale. He loves things like that.

Kathleen,
I really enjoyed your post on old tools. I recall some of those old tools that my grandparents used. It's interesting for me to try to figure out what some of my grandparent's old tools were used for because I don't know the function of some of them. Great story and great photos.
Blessings!

Kathleen, I know just what you mean! I still have an old garden hoe that belonged to my grandmother. I've replaced the handle twice and still use it often. It just feels good. There's something about things that have been well-used and loved that comforts us, isn't there?

I'm crazy about old things-so I loved this post. Most of the time-I'd rather have something old than new. Just so much history in those old items.

I have a kitchen full of treasures like you have. Most of the items are inherited but I have found a few pieces here and there to fill in. I have an old mixer but retired it because I had to unplug it to make it stop. I have a fondness for outdoor tools as well!!

Just think of all the work that was accomplished and the lives that were affected by the people who used all those tools. Fun post, Kathleen. :)

I can see by all the comments that there are a lot of people like us that love these old things. We looked at an old Sunbeam mixer at the antique mall last week. Hmmmm, I think I will go back and look at it again. (if it's still there).

I certainly do remember those old push lawnmowers! That's all we had when I was a kid.

And I still use my mother's chrome waffle iron that makes two separate waffles. It'd be considered art deco now. Have no idea how old it is, only that it was the only one in the house when I was growing up, and still works like a charm.
