New Farm Baby..........a life of Taboo

For two days of the weekend flea market, he sat in a metal cage crate , in blowing wind and dust, with people poking at him and picking him up............but no one taking him home.
Just as the flea market was closing, my husband and I were making our way to the parking lot...........
I spotted him............

the second he was in my hands............he was cemented to my heart.
Wrapped up in my jacket and stuck into a worn coka-cola box........he was exhausted and slept all the way home.
I named him...........Taboo

When we arrived home............Zelda was very disapproving..........

but
Sophie and Taboo made friends instantly

Taboo played with his new toys...........

explored my work area and every corner of his new world,

 wore Sophie and himself out..........
and took a nap

and now..........
a life of Taboo
has begun.

The reason I can't wait to open my eyes

in the early morning hours and greet the day.............

The only sound .....as I watch this beautiful day unfold......
is the melodic song of the birds in the woods and out on the prairie.

Besides the alarm clock...........what wakes you in the early unfolding of the day?

It smells like someone has covered the grounds with .................

wildflower perfume.............it smells wonderful!
Wildflowers are in the woods

across the meadow

along the drive

and even where the ground looks uninviting.

Making all of the grounds beautiful

and a walk breath taking.

To add to the beauty, a rainbow arched it's way over the house after a nice rain yesterday.
Here's hoping wildflowers and rainbows
for you this week!

Gertrude is wearing a new Easter dress and hat

I decided to dress her in a bright and vibrant red dress

with a hat perfect for a southern belle.......
isn't she lovely?
So far, with the harsh wind blowing.........all of her clothing has stayed in tact.
She looks so real

that Sophie barks at her every morning and stands a little off from her.......
poor pooch.

Also, I was reading through my vintage cookbooks and found a recipe from an restaurant named Yesteryear in the late 50s.
As you know, this is the name of my vintage shop. This book has recipes from many restaurants and inns during that time. I was curious to know if any of these places still exist. I started researching Yesteryear first. I found and interesting and somewhat sad story that goes with this. You can read this and also get the recipe on my cooking blog
Here's wishing you a very happy Easter!

Beside the chicken yard and the zinnia garden

stands the garden well house........
so weathered from  age and harsh weather..........
and in much need

of repair on the outside......and inside.

Through the weak spots, something has found it's way to live in the well house
every year.
Last year it was nest of baby raccoon along with a large assortment of rats, mice and snakes.
We finally got supplies gathered and were planning on repairing and sealing off the well house........
(photo found on the internet)

until the other night, Sophie and I , with flashlight in hand ,
followed a strange clucking noise.........out to the well house.
Sitting on top of it's roof were a pair of beautiful barn/ screech owls. As I walked up and shone the light on them, they stayed still for just a few moments, before spreading their wings and screeching as they flew away. These owls have been here every year and I enjoy getting a glimpse of them. As Sophie and I turned back toward the house, one of the owls returned to the roof of the well house.
The next day, I had gone inside to turn on the pump , when I heard a soft clucking and squeaking above in the rafters......hidden by the remaining sheet rock..

(photo found on the internet)
I realized that we now have a nest of baby barn owls!  I am thrilled!
As much as I want to get a ladder and look into the hole for a great photo,
I don't dare.......because I don't want the mother to abandon her babies.
So now we are waiting for "babies" to grow and fly away and hopefully
we can repair the well house before another tenant moves in.
So tell me............what kind of owls, if any, do you have in your area?
Do you have problems with critters moving into your spaces?
I would love to hear.

Last week..........we got more snow............

and more ice............
with the grounds in cold slumber. Sophie never tires of walking around in it.

But as the warm weather came and started melting, the grounds woke up and sprang forward their treasure/

Now the sun warms the earth and the Jasmine is in full bloom with it's cheerful yellow blossoms

The ground that seemed so frozen and rock hard has given way to daffodils sprouting in all directions

and in every container.
How about you?
Are you still covered in a blanket of snow...........
or are you seeing signs of spring?
