Along the cottonfield road

the grounds lie dry and hopelessly lifeless.

The gnarled woods look not much better.

But just walk a little further and into the hen house..................
nests are full and the chicken yard is a bustle of fluffed feathers, scratching and pecking.

The pomegranate tree is awakening and starting to bud.

A vibrant butterfly gracefully flits in and out of the flowers, being elusive as ever to my camera.

In the yard.............what my husband calls a weed.........I know he's right,

is blooming and growing in clusters ............
announcing the arrival of spring on it's way.

Weed indeed....................it's too pretty to be called such.............
the tree agrees with me.
How about you?
Is everything still in winter's slumber?
or
has spring's early alarm clock stirred up life from beneath your grounds?
I would love to hear!

We have had a mild winter, one brief snow and some rain. It is beautiful today and I also took a walk. Noticed the weeds whichwill keep growing. We will have a few wildflowers growing soon. And I think some of the weeds might have little flowers too.

I love the dish of eggs! Wish I could have chickens! Oh well. The flowers are pretty, even the one your husband calls a weed. I think it's gorgeous!

Pretty pictures, Kathleen. I'd call those flowers, not weeds. :) Love the butterfly picture. We had a little snow this morning, but it has all melted back off this afternoon.

Spring is knocking on the door here, but there's only a crack there to let it in. We're having very windy days. My backyard is filled with little weeds, Spring Beauties and henbit. The lilies and irises are putting out rapidly; if only the deer will leave them alone.

Spring is popping up everywhere here in Louisiana - and it's a month earlier than usual. I enjoyed seeing your signs of spring; even the "weeds" are beautiful! The bowl of eggs has its own kind of beauty, too!

Hi Kathleen -

We have some of those exact "weeds" in our yard, too! Do you know what they're called?

We've had to mow twice already, and there's a layer of yellow pollen on the ponds, the cars, and everything else. The iris are blooming, the fruit trees. We didn't have much winter this year.

My azaleas are fixing to bloom, too. Have you started your garden? You've got that great greenhouse to keep things going! I've got my onions out, but that's about it so far!

I hope you have a happy week, full of the promise and evidence of spring!

Hello Kathleen,

Weeds are only a plant out of place. It is far better to have something on the ground than bare soil. I am making your Buttermilk Pie later on today. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
I have noticed the difference in the garden here. Though it is going to be hot today probably about 40 degrees C.
Happy days.

We too, just started getting eggs from our hens. I have tulips, peonies, garlic, daffidols and crocus coming up, but no blooms yet.

The "weed" is called a red-stem Filaree. Our cattle love it!

Hey, Cousin Liz, thank you for telling me what it is. I guess you don't have to worry about mowing it down with the cows munching on it. Email me when you can!!

Lovely! I've been thinking a lot about those weeds lately and am trying to get a handle on what can be brought into the kitchen as an edible green. Do you have any experience with them?

I do not see weeds there, I see a field of wonderful color. AND those eggs!! Oh my goodness, the colors...... what a beautiful site!

Your weeds are totally different from mine even though we're in the same state. It is a great temptation to leave those pretty weeds alone and enjoy them, but resist! You did good with catching that butterfly.
