The smell of cinnamon and cloves drifted through the house

as an applesauce cake baked for about an hour in the oven today. I lingered in the open doorway as the aroma, drifted by me and out onto the porch, making me smile................ and for an moment.........remember.
There is just something about an old fashioned applesauce cake baking and filling the home with these favorite aromas, that brings back a flood of memories ..........for me. Scent has always played an important role in my "memory bank". Does it do the same for you?  I can smell the heady fragrance of a cabbage rose and fondly remember certain people who raised them.

The baking smell of applesauce cake, always makes me think of a well worked and gathered in  kitchen, stocked full of vintage figurines and canisters full of flour and sugar.

with canning jars and other glassware on the surrounding shelves. Upon entering this space, one could smell the spices of the baking that had previously taken place that day.
I remember a tiny and gentle elderly lady, guiding my brother and I back to such a spot and having us sit down at her table...........where a small flower patterned dish was handed to each of us, with a slice of this wonderful cake sitting on it. It was still warm.............and so delicious.
The years have passed and I have made many of these cakes. It is one of my favorites...........
a comfort food of sorts.
How about you? What scent do you remember and smile upon?
What is your favorite smell from the kitchen? I would love to hear!

Hi Kathleen,

My father's mother always baked coffee cakes and then would put them in the freezer..whenever I would visit she would pull out a cake and warm me a slice.

She protected this recipe..no one had it...she lived to be just short of 100 years old...and now I have that recipe.

So I would say that a favorite aroma of mine would be to smell this coffee cake baking...it's really nice.

Pink Sparkles for your week!

That looks delicious, Kathleen! I think one of my favorite kitchen smells is that of fresh baked bread. I hope you are having a good week. :)

That is one of my favorite cakes, and it hasn't occured to me to make one till I saw yours! My mouth is watering! Yes, certain smells evoke certain emotions and memories. Since they usually are food related, it is usually pleasant! :D

When I hear of applesauce cake I am reminded of my grandmothers kitchen and the Walton series, Olivia's applesauce cake which I watch often. My favorite scents in the kitchen vary from smelling cinnamon and cloves to onions frying in a pan.. ~smile!
I always enjoy visiting with you, there is such a warm feeling here.
Hugs,
Sue

I would have to say one of my memory triggering smells would have to be sorghum molasses. My daddy and uncle made sorghum in the fall each year and what a delightful treat to be able to eat some right out of the cooking pan or on a hot biscuit for breakfast. A smell from the kitchen that's not too pleasant is that of cooking broccoli or greens; however, forgetting the smell, the greens are wonderful.

My mom never cooked really, but one thing she could make rather well is spaghetti, so that is very homey for me. But in my own house ginger bread and pot roast are my favorite house keeping smells.

Love your rooster, by the way! :)

Hello, Kathleen- your applesauce cake sure looks good.
I know what you mean about certain smells... I never smell cornbread baking that I don't think of my Grandmother- that's what her house smelled like!
And the smell of grease or wood shavings remind me of my Daddy's shop...

Count me in with all the others, Kathleen, in saying that applesauce cake would be great with a glass of cold milk. I enjoy baking fresh cakes especially bannana bread. Also the cooking smells of onions, bacon and eggs in the mornings.

my mom and I made the BEST applesauce cakes - hers were better than what I do now because she canned her own cinnamon spiced applesauce from New Mexico Hondo Valley apples. My favorite smells from the kitchen - coffee, chili cooking (we ARE Texans after all!) and plenty of fresh fruit in a big bowl on the counter. Smells really do evoke more intense memories don't they?

Oh, Kathleen, I'm so grateful you had a wonderful rain. It's great your chickens are laying a lot of eggs. I like chickens. I would love to have a slice of your applesauce cake. I can almost taste it. Yes, smells do bring back memories of the good old days of Mama and Grandma cooking in the kitchen. Have a wonderful week.

Fragrance evokes memory for me too! My maternal grandmother's Emeraude by Coty, my paternal grandmother's Estee Lauder, a lamb roast in the oven for Easter, the Thanksgiving turkey! Of course, I could go on and on, but I do believe in the power of aromatherapy, and Iam definitely NOT New Age in my ideas! I love the scent of apples, peaches, berries and melons, Avon Soft Pink Bubble Bath, Fifth Avenue perfume and I love the fresh scent of Ivory soap--I also love Dove soap and lots of other soaps!
