Another west Texas critter and .....introducing....Baby Naomi

Storm clouds gathered and rolled across the hot dry prairie, dropping rain,
bringing relief to the parched, packed ground. Once again, the moisture brings out some of Texas's rugged creatures......

sorry, this is not baby Naomi.....she's coming up.....this is Tex...one of the many horned toads that inhabit our landscape. If any of you were once a child living in Texas....more than likely this little dinosaur was one of your play things. Ask any Texas kid about chasing horned toads and putting them in their pocket or some little container...and they can tell you what it's all about .It's amazing that there are any left living from all of the trauma that Texas kids give these creatures! {: For you older Texans, I am sure you are smiling at the memory of the toad you once caught. They are not toads....really....they are just armored little lizards and great ant eaters. And completely harmless.

They have a wonderful design while blending in with the west Texas landscape......

they have horns and spikes all over their body

They actually look like little dragons from medieval times...don't you think? Ok........now.....the moment you have all been waiting for........ say goodbye to Tex and hello to.........

Baby Naomi!
Baby Naomi is one of the 8 little chicks that I brought home Mother's day weekend. All the little chicks are developing personalities......especially Naomi. She follows me around .......everywhere I go. If her little legs could keep up...she would be taking morning walks with Sophie and I. She loves to follow me so much.....

that I brought her in to introduce her to my family......they loved her too....as you can see....Sweetie took her right under his wing........on top of.....maybe.....
Look at her.....do you think she knows how to melt someones heart???

Sweetie is showing her ROOSTER PICTURES!....... on the Internet!.....NO!!.... she is already spoken for...Gabriel, Gideon's brother, needs girlfriends because Gideon stole all of his!! And the barnyard does not need another rooster!!!!
Now......have any of you had a weird creature that you chased around and caught when you were little? I would love to hear!

Ok, you already know about me and horned toads! That Naomi is cute as a bug. What kind of chicken is she? Are you sure she will live in the barnyard? She looks pretty comfortable where she is. In fact, she looks pretty interested in the computer. She might peck out her own blog!

I have one frequenting my garden! I love Naomi, she's so cute. Ryan came running in one day, excited, to tell me that he had found a Child of the Earth. He took my camera out to get a photo and came back with a photo of a grasshopper. lol

My granddaughters had horned toads at their home in Texas and they called them little dragons!

I LOVE horny toads! We used to have bookoos of 'em here in East Texas, but as development spread, it's been years since I've seen one. We used to catch 'em when we were kids and keep 'em for a few days and then let 'em go. Fun memories...

Your little Naomi is precious. I didn't know chickens had such funny personalities. Maybe she thinks she's a dog!

Wierd stuff we caught? We had a pet squirrel named Shorty. My dad found him while hunting and part of his tail was missing. We raised him on a doll bottle and I can't remember what else. When he was grown the call of nature beckoned him elsewhere.

We also had a creek closeby and we used to catch crawdads in there. My mom was horrified when we brought them home and kept them for a couple of days in the garage. She didn't know about 'em until they died and stunk up the whole house. Boy did we get in trouble!

Thanks for sharing the pics of your horny toad. They are fascinating creatures. I happened to see different lizard on my front porch this am,. This one has a red head and real shiny body, and was chasing another like itself. I will have to watch for them again. Have a great day, kathleen!

All right, Kathleen, that is just the CUTEST chick I've seen. (and I've seen a few!) The horned toad, not so much, but he's definitely part of our Teas heritage, isn't he!

That is one fat lizard! Very dragon-like for sure.

Chased? Amphibians? Well I do remember taps on my window at night as a signal from my brothers to crawl out and join them. We walked four blocks, two over and two down, to the marshy swampy end of the local lake. There were two bridges that spanned that end of the lake and one in particular that we prefered for froggen'. My job was to run the flash light from up on the bridge trusses, get the target bullfrog frozen and then one of my brothers would gig it and put it in his creel.

In the morning my mother would open her fridge and find a plate of legs already to go for breakfast. Did my parents never catch on that we were going out in the middle of the night? Why did I have to climb out my window instead of just using the door?

Naomi is absolutely adorable! I love black and white chickens!

I used to catch tadpoles (pollywogs) when I was little.

Naomi is as cute as can be. She looks quite comfy there on your hubby's shoulder. HA! :)
