I Have Never Known An Ugly Baby

The cool morning soon burned off into a hot, sultry, west Texas day that so many of us, in this part of country, are familiar with.

Off in the distance, storm clouds gathered and thunder boomed, making the heat even more intense.

Soon the breeze picked up..... a cool welcoming breeze, then the wind blew the dirt from the field.......until the welcoming melody of raindrops could be heard splattering in the flower beds surrounding our home.

After a storm passes, it is one of the best times for Sophie and I to take a walk. The fields and prairie had a beautiful rainbow arched over them.

Along the way home, I stop by the large mud puddle in front of our home and catch a glimpse of something unusual. I reach down to pick it up.........

and it was this.......can you tell what it is???

Isn't this the cutest baby you have ever seen? Now I have to tell you......I love babies! Every kind of baby ........ is a precious baby to me. I have never known an ugly baby!

I am in awe at the detail on this tiny creature.

If you click on the pictures, you can see the detail in it's shell and little feet.

This is how tiny it really is.....the quarter is almost larger. I kept it long enough to show my sweetie when he got home from work, and then I let it go back to the mud puddle. You can bet I will be back out there tomorrow to see if I can see it again!

Sophie's wet prints on the back patio. Now, I know in my recent posts I asked you about what you might see after a rain.....so I 'll ask.....do you think all babies are cute? What is the strangest kind of baby you've seen? Have you really ever seen an ugly baby......honestly??? I would love to hear.

You're absolutely correct - all babies are just cute as they can be! I 'specially like kittens and puppies, but baby chicks are awfully sweet, too.

I too love baby chicks, ducklings, puppies, kittens, and even ugly little newly hatched birds. There is something about the vulnerability of new-borns of any species that causes tenderness in us, don't you think?

That is absolutely without a doubt the smallest turtle I've ever seen. He is beautiful. I wonder how big he'll get. Imagine a God that could speak such things into existence. Thanks for the opportunity to see that through your lens.

I just love taking walks with you. And, yes, babies are precious. There is something about a newborn creature that tugs at our heartstrings...even tiny little turtles.

Yep, I agree no ugly babies as far as I can see, oh wait unless I ever saw the starling's babies, nah I'm sure their babies are cute it is just the parents I can't stand. But I have heard of ugly babies, human babies.

My husband works with a man who cannot resist being a jokester, a straight faced, deadpan, jokester. The same man that when I was in tears coined the phrase, "sheep-p-r".

Well anyway, students are always bringing their wives and babies in to introduce them to their instructors and this man, Jim, always gets out his reading glasses, puts them on the tip of his nose and declares that "indeed that is the ugliest baby" he has ever seen. It is always taken in good humor because everyone knows there are no ugly babies. But he says it each and every time.

One day a student came by with his baby when Jim was still in class, Dirt, my husband, took one look at the baby and the beeming father and began hoping that Jim would not show up. Then the dreaded happened, Jim entered the room and Dirt ducked his head down as if to read a memo. Jim got out his glasses and perched them on the end of his nose, took a good look at the baby and said, "mmmm" and walked to his own desk. My husband melted into a puddle of relief, for you see he says that it was really an ugly baby. But like the fable of the ugly duckling we all know that the homeliest babies make the most beautiful grown-ups! I myself was a very cute baby.

Well, maybe I've been here longer,so I can say ..YES!, I have seen some ugly babies ..one of my own was an ugly duckling, but turned out to be quite a charm :o)
I wouldn't tell a mother she had an ugly child...to her it's a darling...kittens, and other animals do seem to be adorable when they are babies...and soon grow into it's true self..Kathleen your eyesight is great, I would have missed that one....Ginny

How sweet! It's so tiny and cute!
When Josh was born, we saw a baby in the nursery with a huge head and we could tell exactly who the father was because he was adoring his child through the window and he also had an enormous head. (It wasn't hydrocephaly).

Kathleen,
Thank you for commenting on my blog. I did not make the basket. I took the photo at an Appalachian Folk Center in Asheville, NC.
